On Wednesday night at the High School, the East Greenwich Boys Volleyball team hosted a Division II Injury Fund tournament. Cranston East, Cranston West, Tollman, and North Smithfield all competed in this pre-season event. Many EG students came out to cheer on the team as they tore up the court. This year’s team is led by captains Thomas Shaughnessy, Matt Plympton, and Matt Sommer. The lineup for the season is already looking strong. A typical point? Libero Jonny Podrazo digs the ball to keep it off the floor. Matt Plympton sets the ball up to a hitter, like Chris Rivera or Jason Mirandou, who pummels the ball to the ground. You could substitute many other names into this scenario, given that this team definitely has depth.
Speaking with Cole Campbell after the game revealed very positive feelings towards this upcoming season. He brought up the fact that six of the guys have been playing together for the last three years. As spectators can already see, this history translates to strong, uniform playing. Cole’s feelings of excitement towards the matches ahead of them are shared by many, including Coach Justin Amaral. Coach Amaral’s calm and knowledgeable style is bound to take this promising team far. If tonight’s 4-0 sweep is any indication, we’re in for an exciting season. Come check out a game and see for yourself!
