Life as a Lawyer

By Alana Modi

Drafting settlements, communicating with clients, going to court, and then doing it all over is the job of a lawyer. Being able to use evidence and even the slightest piece of information against the other side can give you a leg up, one that can only be obtained by being a tedious reader. Answers will never be handed over, and working to dig up answers is the highlight of this job. Completely inhaling the laws, bylaws, and more addressed in every book and Constitution is the way to success and ensures that there is never a time where something small gets by you. Thinking about a way to manipulate an ordinary solution and thinking one step ahead is the only way to claim success in such a competitive career area, where no one has any sympathy for another to get on top. Staying on your toes, never showing weakness, and outsmarting those around gives you the opportunity to advance and stay at the top.

Many times lawyers may come off as arrogant, rude, or even straight up annoying because of the way they portray themselves. Lawyers are people who are trained and study years to become people who can not be taken advantage of and show only their strong side in situations to ensure that they are the best in every situation. This arrogant behavior portrayed is the only way they know how to win and show strength. It is hard for many to turn off a certain type of mindset when they are at home compared to at work. Thirteen years of life is snatched away by our jobs and having a very dominant mindset becomes prominent in most situations. It’s the dedication we have to our jobs that alters our personality and this is what occurs to many lawyers who have a very unique perspective in every situation, because they are forced to step outside of the box and live there.

Lawyers are faced with unexpected defense and offense situations, many times their position not being the one full of evidence. In this job, lawyers need to support their clients and their side of the case the best they can no matter the circumstances. Many times the use of settlements or other forms of agreement are laid out, because sometimes there’s no way of rebounding from a situation. It’s funny how the law works, because many times in a trial there isn’t a clear cut winner, and the success of a case is all dependent on what you acquired out of it.

The law tends to be something that can be taken to the extreme literal and sometimes this can cause one to cancel out another. If a lawyer does not have an in depth knowledge about the laws being presented to the tee, others can take advantage of the wiggle room, causing them to be knocked down to the hard ground, having no way to recover.

Overall the job of a lawyer is one that is full of details and careful examination, one that can not be taken lightly, because many people’s lives depend on the solutions lawyers find. Evidence is key in any situation a lawyer is put in and search of finding reliable evidence is what drives a lawyer to accomplish what they do.
