Today I interviewed principal Hopkins. I asked him a series of questions about what he thinks about the high school and his plans for the future. His answers were very insightful, and he answered my questions with meaning and with purpose. Anyways these were his responses.
Where were you before you came to EGHS?
Mr. Hopkins said that he had come from Smithfield high school. He was an assistant principal there for three years and a principal for one year. He certainly enjoyed his time in Smithfield, but when he saw the job opening in East Greenwich, he took it. He explained how both of the schools were very good educationally, but he thought that the educational beliefs at East Greenwich were greater than the ones at Smithfield..
How has COVID affected your plan for EGHS?
It turns out that Mr. Hopkins was hired during COVID and had to make his plans around the idea of COVID. However, he believed that despite the effect of COVID, the school should still be very interactive and social. He believes that the spread of awareness and interaction in school is necessary for a positive environment.
What is your plan for sports at EGHS?
Mr. Hopkins was not able to choose what he wanted to do with sports at school as the school had to follow the rules made by the interscholastic league. However, Mr. Hopkins knows the importance of sports at school as he was a former coach and player. He used to play basketball at Cranston West, and later, he became the basketball coach there. He knows what sports represent to the school and how they affect everyone in the school.
Is there anything you would want to change about EGHS? If yes, then what?
Mr. Hopkins said that he did not want to change anything, but he did want to implement different things. For example, he is committed to unity in school and out of school as he believes it is very important for the school community. He believes in cultural unity and making everyone welcome no matter what ethnicity they are. He is also willing to satisfy anyone’s needs in school to make them feel welcome and comforted.
How much longer do you think COVID will affect schools? What do you expect?
Mr. Hopkins believed that COVID would affect school for the rest of the year including some of next year. He knows that COVID impacts everyone and that it is a very pressing matter. However, while people are going through this stuff, he is exploring different ways to teach and different ways to get the message through to people. He is ready for anything to come and he has been anticipating it so he is completely prepared.
What football team will you be rooting for this year?
Mr. Hopkins is a big football fan and also a big Patriots fan. He has loved watching Tom Brady ever since he was in high school. This means he is also rooting for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Despite him rooting for Tampa, he still likes the Patriots and still has a lot of respect for Bill Belichick.
Overall, it was very pleasant and enjoyable to interview Mr. Hopkins. He was a very nice and open person to talk to. He was very clear and answered every question with a lot of thoughtfulness. I am glad he is our principal and I believe he will be very good in the future for our school.
