The Spectrum would like to congratulate the EGHS Avengers Football team on an incredible season. The boys finished 8-4, placing third in all of D2, only behind North Kingstown and Moses Brown. The league was shocked, as were the coaches. “I’ve never had a group overachieve more than you guys did this year, and I’m very proud of all of you,” Coach George said to a huddle of emotional football players following the Thanksgiving day game. “We started a lot of young guys, and that’s not usually a recipe for success,” Coach finished. The Avengers finished the year in this game with a 36-7 win over Exeter-West Greenwich. And despite the strong senior talent that helped push this year forward, the future is only looking brighter as the offense and defense are returning more than half of their starters. The Spectrum would like to congratulate the following seniors on impressive careers and great playoff runs to finish them: Andrew Licciardi, Andrew Blessing, Will Ladas, Bradley Harrington, Corey Gavin, Gabe Densley, Kent Hanlon, Eamon Keenan, and Hue Peltz. Licciardi will finish his legendary career with 2,744 all-purpose yards, 265 tackles, a second-team all state award as a junior, and a likely first team all-state award this year to compliment an incredible senior season. Blessing tallied 4,585 passing yards in his 3-year career, setting the school passing record, along with 54 TDs. And Ladas amassed 97 tackles and 6 sacks in two years on the defensive line. We’ll miss you, seniors.
Next year’s captains were named at the end of season banquet; congratulations to John Anderson and Kevin Licciardi! Anderson finished this year with 90 career tackles and 3 sacks, and Kevin is so far at 1,210 all-purpose yards. The team is already optimistic again, as the coaching staff looks for another successful season. With North Kingstown and Moses Brown likely moving up to Division 1, the Avengers are already becoming a playoff favorite for next season. EGHS expects big things.
