The Avengers girls swim team continued their success this season in Division 1 at the Bay View Invitational on Sunday, January 29, at the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on the Brown University campus. The meet is one of the biggest of the year, with top swimmers from schools around the state and even Massachusetts attending. The team finished with 217 points for an impressive third overall behind Barrington and North Kingstown, who each won 247 and 242 points, respectively.

Audrey Brecher, Meghan O’Brien, Selin Marino, Jill Valente, and Lauren Salvadore each secured top eight finishes, scoring for the team. Audrey Brecher took first place in the 500 yard freestyle, and second place in the 200 yard freestyle. Selin Marino took third in the 200 IM, and fourth in the 500 yard freestyle. Lauren Salvadore took third in the 50 yard freestyle, and fifth in the hundred yard breaststroke. Meghan O’Brien took seventh in the 100 yard butterfly, and also scored points with twelfth place in the 100 yard freestyle. Jill Valente took seventh in the 200 yard freestyle, and also scored points by taking thirteenth in the 100 yard freestyle.

The 200 medley team of Selin Marino, Lauren Salvadore, Meghan O’Brien, and Audrey Brecher finished second behind Prout’s 1:52.75 time with a time of 1:55.31, which was 0.20 seconds faster than third place Narragansett High School. The 200 free relay team of Emma Macdonald, Ana Karabots, Selin Marino, and Jill Valente finished ninth in 1:50.50, scoring points. In the final heat of the final event of the day, Meghan O’Brien, Jill Valente, Lauren Salvadore, and Audrey Brecher culminated the meet with an amazing, extremely close second place in the 400 free relay behind Barrington High School, with a time of 3:46.88, just a second behind Barrington’s 3:45.87.

The third place finish was a fabulous showing for the EG girls and the majority of EG swimmers came home with personal bests in their respective events. Sylvie Hack, Riya Sen, Caroline Quinn, Brooke Morganti, Molly Miranda, and Grace Kiernan also swam well for the Avengers. Both the boys and girls teams were promoted to RIIL Division 1 after the girls won the Division 2 title last year, and the boys finished high in the standings. Both teams are faring quite well in D1, and there’s no questioning the girls’ success so far based on this recent meet.

The Avengers swim team continues their regular season with Senior Night for boys and girls this Thursday at Fox Point Boys and Girls Club in Providence. Come cheer on the team in their final home dual meet, starting at 7:00 pm this Thursday, February 2nd, versus Cranston East.
