Avengers Football Update

The Avengers Football Team lost a close non-conference game on Saturday to the Classical Purples, with a final score of 48-35. It was back and forth until the very end, with the game tied 35-35 in the final minutes of the fourth quarter. Classical was able to edge out the victory on their commemorative senior game, but things are still moving in full steam for East Greenwich.

EG trailed Classical for most of the game, but rallied late with interceptions and touchdowns to shrink the gap. A recovered kick by Classical and a quick touchdown in the final two minutes helped put a cap on the game, but there were certainly positive signs for maroon as they head into their postseason run.

Senior captain Matt Sylvia finished an incredible game with 7 receptions for 144 yards, along with a touchdown. To add to his performance, junior Andrew Licciardi recorded 5 catches for 70 yards and a touchdown, in what could be considered another day at the office for the speedy receiver. Senior Russell Caramagno was a huge contributor on the scoring side, with 3 catches for 80 yards, and two touchdowns. But at the wheels all game was junior quarterback Andrew Blessing, who complimented a 303 yard performance with 4 passing touchdowns, and one touchdown rushing.

On the defensive side of the ball, Andrew Licciardi and senior Alex Pembroke led the team in tackles, with 17 and 13 respectively. Licciardi also came up with 2 interceptions for 47 yards, and senior Mitchell Gemma started the game off with a 10 yard interception return as well. Captain Donovan Cassidy added 9 tackles, along with Matt Sylvia and Michael Guadagni’s 8 each. Sylvia also blocked a field goal, and junior linebacker Corey Gavin deflected a key pass late in the game.

Head Coach John George was satisfied with the effort the boys put together, noting, “You all fought hard till the very end. I like to see that.”  With influential players like Gemma and Pembroke healthy for the postseason, the team has reasons to be excited. Despite the loss, East Greenwich is slated for a first round playoff matchup at Shea, on November 11th.
