A Rapid-Fire with Mrs. Z

By Morgan Walsh

You may have seen Mrs. Z in class, taking the role of teacher’s assistant to Mr. Rath as he teaches full distance. You may have had her step in as a friendly substitute teacher in one of your other classes as well. Either way, here’s a bit about Mrs. Zeighler, a recent college grad with hopes of holding her own classroom in the future.

 What is your name?

Kate Joan Zeighler. Joan was my Grandmother’s name.

What did you major in college?

I graduated from the University of Vermont with a major in biology and a minor in sociology. I loved UVM, it’s such a cool town with great people, great skiing if you ski.

What was your dream job as a kid?

I used to really be into riding horses and taking care of them so I really wanted to do that. I wanted to be an equestrian when I was younger.

What is your favorite item that you have thrifted?

I thrifted these really baggy vintage levi jeans and I’m obsessed with them. I wear them all the time.

Do you enjoy being Mr. Raths TA so far?

I like it but I definitely want to look into going back [to college] to get another degree so I can have my own classroom. I consider you guys my students but I would like to take the lead one day and have more of a role. But I do enjoy it, he [Mr. Rath] is one of the best people to work with.

If you could go to one restaurant for the rest of your life where would you go?

Olive Garden because they have unlimited breadsticks. I mean good pasta, unlimited carbs, you can’t go wrong.

What is your favorite way to spend time with friends or family?

Just having a board game night. I would say that would be my ideal time with my friends. I went through a really big monopoly and clue phase.

What’s on top of your bucket list right now?

I would really love to go to New Zealand. Once Covid is over and it’s safe to travel I’d love to travel to New Zealand, it’s somewhere I’ve always wanted to go.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

Getting my honors thesis done for college. It was a really big accomplishment for me just because it was four years of accumulative work on something that I really loved. Right now we’re working on getting the paper published, so if I could get it published in a scientific journal that would be a huge accomplishment.

What’s your favorite TV Show right now?

New Girl

What is the trait you most admire in people?

When people are able to be funny, I would say that. Just anyone who can make other people laugh.

What would you do if you won the lottery?

I’d like to say I would travel but I think I would do something really nice for my parents because they’ve given me so much. I don’t know what that would be, maybe my dad would like a nice boat or something. I would use it to give back to them.

If you could have dinner with anyone in history who would it be?

Freddie Mercury 100%. My second pick would be Ruth Beta Ginsburg though.

What is the best part of your day?

The early afternoon, from 2-3pm kinda. When it’s still light out and I’ve woken up and done things already, but I still feel I can do more with my day.

If a Hollywood movie was about your life, which actress would you want to play it?

Zooey Deschanel, especially since she’s a super quirky teacher in New Girl.

If you had to pick a type of dog that compliments your personality which would you choose?

I have a dog named Cooper, and he’s a cockapoo which can sometimes be small and rat looking, but I have a really cute one. I would probably pick a Samoyed or a Bernese mountain dog, I really like those.

If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things

would you bring?

Netflix, my dog, well I don’t know if I’d choose my

dog over my family so the whole family including dog,

and mac n cheese.

What’s your biggest pet peeve?

It really bothers me when people leave their turn signals on when they’re driving but not turning.
